Developed by EdwinSoft, Bookmarking Demon is the winner in our social bookmarking shoot-out.

Even though all the software featured on this site is capable of doing the job of social bookmarking, this position is well deserved for a couple of reasons.

First, Bookmarking Demon is updated regularly. Not just once a month, but sometimes two or three times in the same week. You have to understand that this is a massive point, because the bookmarking sites are always updating and changing how they operate. And when this happens, all the automated software in the world won’t help you if it can’t talk to the site.

Simply put, the fast and regular updates to Bookmarking Demon mean that when a change happens (and they happen a lot), you are back in the game faster than anyone else, keeping you ahead. In use, we found BMD to update more comprehensively and more often than its competitors.

The second reason is closely related to the first. When you buy BMD, you pay once and you have it for life. No monthly fees, no update costs. If you run your website like a business, the return on investment suddenly becomes a lot higher compared to the also excellent but totally overkill SENuke.

And because of the speed of the updates, the software retains its value. You won’t find any working copies of BMD on torrent or file download sites. You purchase it and it feels valuable to you, unlike the cracked copy of Photoshop that every foreteen year old IT geek has. In a world where everything feels cheap and disposable, this really is a worthwhile and exclusive buy.

Now, we have recommended this program to a few people before and they were like “I’ll buy it and get the money back refund once I’ve copied it”. Interestingly, none of them have ever wanted the refund.

At its core, Bookmarking Demon does what all the other programs do – automate the posting of bookmarks to multiple sites. The elegance with which it does this, combined with the above two reasons, this becomes a piece of software that you can do nothing but desire.

By default, BMD comes with around one hundred sites pre-loaded, with the option for you to load lists of alternative sites based on Scuttle and Pligg. We recently saw a list of 3,000+ of these sites pre-compiled for Bookmarking Demon, so you could have a selection of many thousands ready to post to by the time you get the software installed.

The built in account manager is designed for multiple accounts across multiple bookmarking sites, with automatic account creation from the massive database of alias names. Of course, email verification is automatic too, so you don’t have keep hitting those “click here to verify your account” messages. This is all streamlined into an effective project management system, so you can organize your campaigns, identities, accounts etc, something that is lacking in all the other applications reviewed.

There is also a post scheduler and randomizer that makes your bookmarking look more natural by allowing you to pick times to post bookmarks when you are away from your computer. The randomizer changes the speed that items are entered into bookmarking site, so it doesn’t look like you are using a auto-poster.

Then there is the support for proxies (essential if you are doing lots of bulk work), spinnable text and Decaptcher.com, oh and RSS and domain crawlers too. In fact, you will find so much stuff in Bookmarking Demon that it makes your head spin.

We particularly like the RSS camoflague feature. This allows your site to be bookmarked within a list of feeds that will be pulled off a website of your choosing. When your account is examined at whatever social bookmarking site you happen to use, your site will be mixed in with other popular stories from whatever feeds are appropriate for you.

This does two things really:

1. Your account will look more natural, instead of just looking like spam
2. If people are following your content and you post from good feeds, they are more likely to click on the sites you want to promote

You really have to start wondering if EdwinSoft have come up with the perfect software program.

Whilst it would not take much for some of the other programs reviewed here to catch up to BMD, the fact is that they haven’t and until they start looking at what Bookmarking Demon is doing so well in terms of its elegance, management and process streamlining, this software will be in first place. It’s as simple as that.

TOP PICK: 5 stars

Created by Koen Berkenbosch, aka Nossie, BookmarkWiz is a social bookmarking submission tool that is a cross between the utilitarian Social Submitter and the feature packed Bookmarking Demon.

BookmarkWiz hides a lot of power under its deceptively simple user interface. Upon loading and activating, you are presented with a window with eight tabs. There are no menus or buttons; everything is accessible from the tabs alone. The only settings in the software are the fields for entering Decaptcher/BeatCaptcha keys.

I cannot stress how easy it is to use this software. It is a total cakewalk.

Account creation and verification is automated, so all you have to do is tell BookmarkWiz what email accounts you want to check for sign-up emails. Using a datasheet style window, you punch in the usernames, passwords and server information… And you are done.

Click the “Registration” tab and you will be presented with another datasheet window with all the email addresses you previously entered. To the right of it on each row, there are the username and password details, followed by a string of checkboxes to tell the software what bookmarking sites you want to sign up for. Just pick the sites and click the register button… And you are done.

To active your newly created account, when it is finished signing up, go to the “Accounts” tab, select the new accounts, click the activate button… And you are done.

Are you spotting a theme here? It really is that easy.

Finally, head over to the “Submit” tab, punch in your target URL, title, description and tags. These are all tied together with a spinnable text system so you can rotate the words that you use for anchor text etc. Press the submit button and the process starts, leaving you to either farm out captcha’s to an external service or solve them yourself with your own keyboard.

And that’s it.

BookmarkWiz is the program that Social Submitter wants to be. Easy, uncluttered and so simple to use that a brain dead idiot could use it. But since Social Submitter was released before BookmarkWiz, it is more likely that Koen took the potential in Social Submitter and put it into his own program, which is an astute move in my opinion.

But there is always a downside… Otherwise this would be the winner in this review.

The simplicity and elegance of BookmarkWiz comes with a price. It may be fast and easy to use, but part of the reason for that is because it is purposefully limited in the amount of sites it can bookmark to.

At last count, this application can only post to thirty-three bookmarking sites. There is also no way to add your own sites to the list, leaving it slightly crippled.

I can see why this has been done in order to maintain quality control, speed and ease of use, not to mention taking a load off the developer when it comes to updating the site database….

But thirty-three??

That is shameful compared to nearly every other program in this review. Only SEnuke comes off worse in this department, but since SEnuke does so much more than just bookmark, it sort of has an excuse.

Also, Bookmarking Demon has the edge in user account and project management. With the complexity involved in structuring mass social bookmarking, you really need a clear way to manage the information. BookmarkWiz simply ignores this with its simple simpleness.

And that is a dumb move in my book, because it will just take one smart developer to look at BookmarkWiz, take its potential and put it into their own program.

Bookmark Wiz: So much to love, yet flawed by its own simplicity.

Blog Comment Demon addresses another problem, in a similar vein to it’s sister software, Bookmarking Demon.

What it sets out to do is to fully automate the process of posting comments onto the pages of high page ranking blogs, in order to create more links, and therefore traffic, back to your site.

There are 3 main ways to obtain traffic, without resorting to blackhat methods which could get you and your site delisted from Google.

The first is the likes of Adwords and other paid links or adverts. These can be VERY effective, especially when targeted well with the appropriate keywords. The downside is that they can be very expensive and they are only useful for as long as you keep paying the bill.

The second is through a link exchange program. The idea is that you post a link from another site on your site, and they do the same for you. A great idea in theory, except Google’s algorithms now weight these link exchanges with a lot less gravity, so it can place your page rank at risk.

Finally, posting comments and text onto other forums and blogs. This is a very effective way of building up back links, from some very highly ranked sites, and also decreases the amount of time required to be indexed by the search engines. The problem again, which is the problem that Bookmarking Demon solves with social tagging, is that it is so time consuming.

Blog Comment Demon circumvents the issue by automatic posting and tracking of posting comments. It will automatically locate blogs related to specific keyword searches and post content to them.

Since most bloggers want comments but don’t want comment spam, they tend to enable Akismet or some other comment approval system. Blog Comment Demon has this awareness built in and tracks comment approval on your behalf.

It is packed with features such as blog page rank search, auto form filling, stats etc, and it really does do what it says on the tin.

The downside to this software is really in the arena of blog commenting in general. This is a great program. It works. The question is now “does blog commenting help in promoting my website”?

Here’s the problem. When blogging first started rising to prominence in the late 90′s/early 00′s, the web (and I mean web – not the internet) was younger and our computers were slower, not to mention our line speeds. Blog platforms added commenting and feedback systems to them, to allow readers and writers to interact. This is, after all, one of the main benefits of this technology: sharing.

At this time, you really only found spam in emails. But as line and computer speeds went up, we find that spammers got rather sophisticated, creating a whole bunch of automation tools, including those that post millions of blog comments very quickly. In fact, a bit like this product on review.

I’m not saying Blog Comment Demon is an uber-spam blackhat tool. Instead, think of it like a stick of dynamite. You could use it to blast your way through a large chunk of rock which is in your way in your garden, or you could blow yourself up along with lots of people. One of these could be useful, the other not-so-much.

But it is because of these tools that I am calling into question the process. WordPress changed all their link settings to no-follow by default. A couple of weeks back, yet another major CMS provider did the same. In the game of link relevancy, do you really think that a link to your blog in amongst a million others that say “buy viagra” or “ugg boots” is going to help your search rankings?

It is true, blog commenting isn’t as effective as it once was. But I would be a liar if I said it didn’t work. It does work. Why? Because there are people who still swear by Yahoo and the big Y don’t care about this nofollow nonsense in their ranks. And because both blog readers and writers will follow links if what you have said has interested them.

And that is, as far as I am concerned, the key. Add value. Say something useful, meaningful, even provocative, but make it relevant. Use it for what it was meant for, but use the automation tools to do it, and you may find yourself getting dofollow links from blogs that are all nofollow.

In terms of automation tools, Blog Comment Demon may be the little sister of the two compared to Bookmarking Demon, but it saves no less time in it’s area of speciality.

Use it wisely!

In our number 3 slot, we have Social Submitter by the SEO DevGroup.

With the interface spread out over four tabs, Social Submitter is capable of posting to well over two hundred social bookmarking sites after installation. These sites are contained in a database accessible on the “Users” tab. The site database is updated weekly and there is also a blank database for storing and managing sites that you discover on your own.

However, there is no built in account creation function. Instead, you must either create the accounts in your browser manually and then import them, or buy pre-created accounts from the company website. This is a little disappointing compared to BMD, where the account creation is built into the application and the process is streamlined.

Manual account creation is a real pain. Since one of the main reasons for using auto-bookmarking apps is to save time, this problem should be addressed. Perhaps in a future update? The same could be said for the project and user management sections themselves because, whilst they are clean and uncluttered, the interface is very utilitarian and doesn’t really lend itself to good organisation. Social Submitter feels like you are operating a database instead of a productive tool.

Once you have your accounts loaded into the program, you can progress onto the “Submit” tab.

This is where the over-engineered interface works really well, allowing you plenty of space to set your target URL, bookmark title, description and tags. On the right of the window is a formatted preview of bookmarked information and towards the bottom of the window, a list of links are displayed from the target URL page. Double clicking any of these links will cause it to become the target URL instead. Also, the whole “Submit” tab uses a spinnable text engine, which Social Submitter calls the “Synonimizer”. On the whole, this section is very well thought out.

There is also a “Crawl and Submit” tab. This is basically the same as the submit tab, except that it has a web site crawler attached to it. It will trawl through a website, picking out all the pages it discovers, ready for bookmarking. However, as anyone with any bookmarking experience will tell you, doing this will probably get your account deleted. Definitely one to use with caution!

When you are ready to submit, you are taken to the last tab, the “Stats” section. This will show you what is being bookmarked and what the success rate is, all in real time.

In all, Social Submitter is a great piece of software. But it was given 3rd place for a reason…

First, there is the little issue of updates. The software is updated frequently, which is great. However, you have to pay to receive the updates after three months, so it is actually subscription software. I can appreciate the reason for doing this from a business standpoint, but for the customer it is rubbish. You have to buy the software and then buy the updates. SEnuke works on a subscription basis, but you don’t have to buy the software first. It seems SEO DevGroup want the best of both, which is bad news for the user.

The problem I have with this is as follows. If I buy Bookmarking Demon, I have it for life with all the updates, which is great. If I buy SEnuke, I have to subscribe to access the software, which is fine. And if there are months I don’t want to subscribe, I can stop and not get access to updates, which is also fine.

But if I do the same thing with Social Submitter, I have bought and paid for an expensive piece of software that doesn’t work. If I buy a cable TV package, I am not made to buy the set-top box; it is free. So imagine that you did have to buy the set-top box and then you cancelled your subscription. That’s a whole lot of money you don’t get back and there is a very tangible loss of value.

Secondly, there is a lot missing from Social Submitter. Where is the Decaptcher support? Where is the auto-account creator? What about project management? SEO DevGroup need to catch up in these areas, especially if they want to continue their slightly unfair business model.

Lastly there is the user interface. When it works, it works brilliantly. But when it doesn’t, it feels like the clunkiest over-engineered piece of software on the planet. This is a powerful bookmarking application and it should be a joy to use…. But, unfortunately, it isn’t.

A good social bookmarking tool with a lot of potential, but not quite good enough.
Well, a few reasons actually. This site is a top 5 comparison review of social bookmarking software tools. SEnuke has a pretty good social bookmarking automation module.

But to say that is all it does would be a complete lie. SEnuke is intended to be a killer search engine marketing application, with modules for creating accounts across multiple types of Web 2.0 properties and posting to them, including article, video, blog and wiki sites. In that sense, it is way more than just a social bookmarking tool, containing an article spinner, an RSS manipulator and a pinger.

The first time we saw SEnuke, it blew us away. There are only one or two other apps that come close to its level of power and one of those requires server hosting with a large amount of proxies.

When it works, it is downright brilliant. When it doesn’t it is infuriating. Crashes are frequent and until recent times, updates weren’t exactly speedy. It is like one of those tanks that the A-Team would build out of scraps: insanely powerful, but if you kicked it hard, it would fall apart.

If you look how far the likes of BMD or Social Submitter have come, SEnuke looks a bit silly and is very much a case of you don’t know what you are missing… Until the competition comes up with it.

Where is the account management? The scheduler? The random/human element? Or how about an interface that doesn’t look like something a five year old designed?

Fortunately, updates have become a bit more frequent now, but there was a time when it was thought the software had died from lack of support. As we have pointed out several times through these reviews, continuous updates are so important to this sort of software and reliability is key if you wish to incorporate tools like this into your work.

In closing, SEnuke is an awesome piece of software, capable of so much more than just social bookmarking.

However, if we were to just use the social bookmarking module on its own and compare it to every other piece of software in this review, its crummy user interface, unreliability and poor management put it firmly into 4th place.

On paper, this application should totally kick butt. It reads like a social bookmarking enthusiasts birthday present list: over a thousand built in sites, a website spider engine, spinnable text capabilities, an auto account creator, proxy support, etc.

All for less than $30! Isn’t that amazing?

Well, no actually, it isn’t.

IncanSoft’s SocialBot has more holes in it than a piece of Swiss cheese in a colander.

Lets clear some of this up. Since the vast majority of the built in sites are Pligg/Scuttle based, you are left with slightly over fifty proper bookmarking sites to use, which makes it only slightly better than BookmarkWiz in this area. Of course, you can add more to the Pligg list if you wish, a feature only added recently because Incansoft didn’t bother to update the sites database on a regular basis. And some of the sites on the list are questionable to say the least.

The user interface is good, replicating the style of Office 2007 onwards with the ribbon style bar. This is a good thing because if it looked as uninspiring as Social Submitter, I would have had to burn my computer and smear the molten plastic over my eyes to blind me from ever seeing this software again.

In our experience, SocialBot often claims to have successfully bookmarked sites in its reports… Then when we go and look at the links, they don’t exist. Since when does “page does not exist” mean “successful”?

And then there is the random html that it seems intent on pasting everywhere in the reports, reporting these as successes too. The software reported a 47% success rate, but it actually was less than 8%. I’m not great at maths, but even I can see that this is just utterly wrong.

SocialBot has been in development for over four years. My question is “what have they been doing with all that time”?

Seriously, this is like a car maker offering you all the spec, features and benefits of a BWM or a Mercedes but for the price of a moped. Without any wheels.

And that is what this software lacks: wheels. It doesn’t go anywhere. The links it records don’t exist. The account submissions fail. The spider doesn’t register links.

I’m sure not everyone has had this experience. There are many glowing testimonials for SocialBot, so unless IncanSoft have a team of professional liars writing copy for them, there must be some happy users out there.

But this one isn’t happy. I hate this program and advise you to steer clear of it. The only reason it isn’t any stars at all is because it did actually post some bookmarks. Somewhere on a ditch-water bookmarking site on the outskirts of the internet.

My dad used to have a saying which I think applies quite aptly to SocialBot:

If you buy it cheap, you will spend your cash twice.

Welcome to BookmarkingDemon.net!

Lets face it.

Whilst the emergence of social bookmarking has been a great thing, and extremely useful for site traffic, the actual process is time consuming and ultimately boring.

There IS a better way, I can assure you. We’ve rounded up the top 5 social bookmarking tools and reviewed them. Included here are Bookmarking Demon, BookmarkWiz, Social Submitter, SEnuke and SocialBot, so you get the full picture of both what is available and how they work.

So, instead of manually inputting hundreds of bookmarks, think of all the things you could be doing instead:

* Having a beer with your buddies or a glass of wine with your friends
* Playing your favorite video game
* Going somewhere fun with your partner
* Shopping for new stuff
* Eating out at your favorite restaurant

And so on and on.

So, who here would like to save your time, your energy and ultimately your life? What could be better than to get some software to do that for you?

This is our job here with this website, where we compare the various automated social bookmarking products available.

I hope you find something of value.

Here’s to your time

PS: If you have used any of the software listed here, please feel free to add your own comments, ratings and reviews. Money back guarantees are great, but nothing substitutes getting as much information and feedback as possible before you purchase.

Social Bookmarking is the act of creating and managing electronic bookmarks.

But it isn’t just an individual making bookmarks into a closed system, like when you press Ctrl + D on your keyboard when in your browser. If you don’t know what this does, try it now and you’ll find that this site will appear in your favorites list.

How social bookmarking is different is in the fact that the bookmarks and favorites that you create are shared and made public so everyone can see them. Of course, you could change your settings so your bookmarks are private, but that would kind of defeat the point.

But how is that helpful at all? A huge melting pot of massively diverse links isn’t very useful if they cannot be categorized, right?

Right.

Which is why the social bookmarking systems utilize a group tagging system. When the bookmark is added, you can add a series of words which roughly describe the context, content and related subjects of the bookmark in question. On top of that, everyone who sees your bookmark can do exactly the same thing!

This system of groups of people sorting and tagging information is known as “folksonomy”. You may of heard the term “taxonomy”, which is a scientific system of tagging and classification which works on hierarchical units.

Folksonomy is a tagging system, but doesn’t use this explicit scientific method. Instead, it works in the same way as a wiki, so that multiple users view the bookmark and the tags, and then edit them if they are wrong, or even if it just makes more sense to describe it in a different way.

Over time, folksonomy weeds out incorrect information, replacing incorrect or misplaced tags with more and more accurate information.

The great thing about social bookmarking is that it adds a user element to search. Rather than a search engine algorithm dictating what the user gets in terms of results, the tags that the social groups apply are the determining factor.

As such, they are a great way of implementing a user based search, similar to the concept that Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia envisaged.

And we all can see how popular Wikipedia turned out!
